Garmin Forerunner 305 vs. Polar RS400sd

As you all know, I plan to run a half-marathon on February 1st. The goal in the next 8-9 weeks is to simultaneously increase endurance while avoiding injury. I tend to run too fast, so monitoring my pace will be important. Therefore, I have decided to purchase a device which, among other things, will gauge my heart rate and pace.

I've currently narrowed the options down to either the Garmin Forerunner 305 (pictured above in red) or the Polar RS400sd (black). Any thoughts from you runners out there?

I've seen really good reviews on the Garmin. I will try to send you the link. Haven't heard of the other one.

There's a much smaller one for 99 bucks by Garmin I think. they have it for sale at borders actually. for my money size is everything....the smaller the better.

Sara: where's the link? :)

Anonymous: Yes, I think you are referring to the Forerunner 50 model. Garmin also makes a Forerunner 450 that is smaller too. I tried both the Polar and the Garmin 350 on, and the Garmin is quite large.

I'd buy the Forerunner 50, but it doesn't have the capabilities to train against what they call a "Virtual Partner," and with my competitiveness, I think it is a cool option I'd like to have. It's also doesn't come with a foot pod or bike sensor, so the price would be higher than 99 bucks and probably comparable to the other models. My parents, however, have offered to chip in on the purchase, so who knows what I'll end up going with. I'm sure I'll blog about it later, but thanks for your input.
